Pronunciation Notes

Notes on the Consonants in this Lesson:

  • ง (ng): This sound is like the ‘ng’ at the end of the English words “sing” or “bring“. Unlike in English, this sound can appear at the beginning of a Thai word. One way to practice using the “ng” sound at the beginning of a word is to start with the word “longing” and peel off sounds from the beginning until you can say “nging”.
  • ป (p): This is an unaspirated ‘p’. It sounds like the ‘p’ in “spin” or “spot,” not the ‘p’ in “pin” or “pot.” As with the ‘p’ in ‘spin’, there is no puff of air when speaking ป.
  • ด (d): This sound is very similar to the ‘d’ in the English word “dog.”
